The MARIA S. MERIAN differs from other research vessels in that it offers ice-edge capability.
Since entering service on 9 February 2006, it has enabled scientists to conduct research not only in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic but also in the subpolar North Atlantic.
The vessel is named after Maria Sibylla Merian, the founder of German entomology, who at the end of the seventeenth century was the first woman to undertake major scientific voyages by ship.
