The research vessels POLARSTERN, METEOR, SONNE, MARIA S. MERIAN, ALKOR, HEINCKE and ELISABETH MANN BORGESE are purpose-built to meet the requirements of marine research. They are equipped for work in biology, geology, geophysics, glaciology, geochemistry, physical and chemical oceanography and meteorology, and their operating areas are as diverse as marine research itself.
