Planning Pool and Information on Secondary Use

Smaller working groups, especially those from universities, may participate in an existing cruise as secondary users (generally up to three persons per cruise; a maximum of ten persons in the case of POLARSTERN). The requirement is that the group pursues its own independent programme of research activities. In addition, proposals for secondary use can only be submitted for cruises that have already been approved and only allowing sufficient lead time (proposal submission at least one year in advance in the case of large vessels). The same requirements and deadlines apply to cruise proposals for secondary use as to proposals for primary use of the vessels (see “Instructions and Templates(interner Link)”). There is no provision for secondary use on medium-sized research vessels.

The table below provides an overview of all cruises that have received a positive review and have been recommended by the GPF for inclusion in the cruise scheduling process, but which the ship operators have so far been unable to incorporate into existing schedules. By referring to this you can identify upcoming cruises early on that will pass through areas of interest in connection with your research. The chief scientist in question must be informed before a cruise proposal for secondary use is submitted, though their approval is not required.

Cruise Scheduling

The scheduling of positively reviewed cruises for the individual vessels is the responsibility of the respective ship operators: the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) for POLARSTERN and HEINCKE; the German Research Fleet Coordination Centre for METEOR, MARIA S. MERIAN and SONNE; GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel for ALKOR; and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) for ELISABETH MANN BORGESE. There is an additional option to swap deployment periods between the different vessels in order to optimise use of the fleet. See the links below for details of current cruise schedules.
