Large equipment

In addition to the research vessels, marine science institutions in Germany operate a range of sophisticated large equipment that may be used by individuals from other institutions by arrangement with the operators. In order to calculate the costs arising from use of the equipment, the operators have established flat rate charges together with the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF):

> Flat rate charges for the use of specific large equipment in marine research (available in German only)

Further information on how and to what extent these costs may be considered in a cruise proposal is contained in the Guidelines. Confirmation of the basic availability of a large facility must be furnished when submitting an application for a cruise.

Other equipment

Research groups, in particular those at universities, can hire the equipment required for carrying out an expedition via a network of marine research institutions. Further information is available from the Senate Commission on Oceanography (SKO).
